Born on July 16, 1706. The second son of Aoyama Yoshimasa, lord of Amagasaki Domain in Settsu (Hyogo Prefecture). He was adopted by Aoyama Toshiharu, and in 1715 became the lord of Tanba Kameyama Domain (Kyoto Prefecture) for the third generation. After serving as a soshaban (a court musician) and temple and shrine magistrate, he was transferred to Tanba Sasayama (Hyogo Prefecture) with a fief of 50,000 koku in 1708, becoming the first Aoyama lord of the same domain.
