Order Odonata, Family Acanthidae. Body length about 70mm, hindwing length about 53mm. The thorax is green with no markings, the back of the first and second abdominal segments is sky blue in males, yellowish green in females, and the third and lower segments are brown in both sexes. The wings are transparent and slightly brown, and may be dark brown in mature females. This is the most common dragonfly seen from summer to autumn, and grows in ponds and marshes on flat land. It is extremely rare in southern Hokkaido, but is widely distributed in Japan south of Honshu, Taiwan, Korea, and China. The Japanese species is called A. p. julius . The closely related black-striped blue-tailed dragonfly A. nigrofasciatus is slightly smaller than this species, and can be distinguished by two black stripes on the sides of the thorax and a T-shaped black mark on the forehead. It appears in May and June, but is less common than this species. It is distributed in Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Korea, and China. Other species include the giant silver dragonfly A. guttatus and the Ryukyu silver dragonfly A. panybeus , which are found in the Ryukyu Islands and areas south of the Ryukyu Islands. (→Dragonflies)

トンボ目ヤンマ科。体長約 70mm，後翅長 53mm内外。胸部は緑色で斑紋はなく，腹部第1，2節背面は雄では空色，雌では黄緑色，第3節以下は雌雄ともに褐色である。翅は透明でやや褐色を帯び，特に成熟した雌では濃褐色を帯びることがある。夏から秋にかけて最も普通にみられるヤンマで，平地の池沼に成育する。北海道南部ではきわめて珍しいが，本州以南の日本，台湾，朝鮮，中国に広く分布する。日本産は亜種 A. p. juliusという。近縁のクロスジギンヤンマ A. nigrofasciatusは本種よりやや小型で，胸部側面に2本の黒条があり，前額にT字形の黒色紋があるので区別できる。5～6月に出現するが，本種より少い。本州，四国，九州，朝鮮，中国に分布する。ほかに南西諸島およびそれ以南の地域に分布するオオギンヤンマ A. guttatus，リュウキュウギンヤンマ A. panybeusがある。 (→トンボ類 )
