Weeding - Weeding

Eliminating weeds from cultivated land. Also called weed control, this includes not only removing growing weeds, but also suppressing their growth. Methods for preventing weed growth include plowing the soil deeply to bury weed seeds that are abundant in the topsoil deep under the cultivated soil, or covering the ground with straw or vinyl to suppress germination, known as mulching. Methods for eliminating weeds that have emerged include hand weeding, shallow stirring of the topsoil to kill newly sprouted weeds, tillage weeding in the ridges to cut the roots of weeds and kill them, and burying weeds in the soil. In paddy fields, a method is to fill the water deeply and drown the weeds. Along with the physical weeding methods mentioned above, chemical weeding methods using herbicides have recently become widespread. Herbicides are classified into two types: those that kill plants indiscriminately and those that kill only specific weeds. Weeding, which was once said to be the most difficult farm work done under the scorching sun, is now done using a combination of physical and chemical methods, and its proportion of total farm labor has dropped dramatically.

耕地から雑草を駆除すること。雑草防除ともいい、生育中の雑草を除去することだけでなく、発生を抑制することも含まれる。雑草の発生防止には、深く耕して表土に多い雑草種子を作土の下深くに埋めてしまう方法や、藁(わら)やビニルなどで地面を覆う、いわゆるマルチングによって発芽を抑制する方法などがある。発生した雑草を駆除するには、手取り除草をはじめ、表土を浅く攪拌(かくはん)して芽生えたばかりの雑草を殺す方法、うね間を耕して雑草の根を切断して枯らす中耕除草、雑草を埋め込んでしまう培土などの方法がある。水田では、水を深く張り、雑草を溺死(できし)させる方法もある。以上のような物理的除草法とともに、最近では除草剤を用いる化学的除草法が普及している。除草剤には、無差別に植物を枯らす型のものと、特定の雑草だけを枯らす選択性除草剤とがある。炎天下でのもっともつらい農作業といわれた除草も、現在では物理的除草法と化学的除草法とを組み合わせて行われており、全農作業労力中に占める比率は激減した。
