Son of Prince Mino. His mother was Agata no Inukai no Michiyo. He was originally called Prince Sai. In the 5th year of the Yoro era, he became the tutor of the Crown Prince Obito (Emperor Shomu). In the 8th year of Tenpyo era, he became a commoner along with his elder brother Prince Katsuragi (Tachibana Moroe) and took the name Tachibana.
