A nobleman in the mid-Heian period. Known as Kan'in Grand Minister of State. Ranked Junior First Rank (posthumously awarded Senior First Rank). Son of Minister of the Right, Michisuke, and Princess Yasuko, daughter of Emperor Daigo. Lost his parents at a young age, and grew up in the Imperial Court under his elder sister, Yasuko, who was 30 years older than him and the Empress of Emperor Murakami, and was treated as an equal to an Imperial prince (Okagami). Perhaps this explains his gentle and calm personality. At the age of 25, he became Junior Third Rank (not a councilor), and in 997, he became Minister of the Interior, replacing the fallen Fujiwara no Ise. Twenty years later, he became Minister of the Right, and in 1021, he became Grand Minister of State, a position he held until his death. Posthumously named Ningyo-ko, he is the founder of the Kan'in line. His daughter, Yoshiko (with Princess Ariake, daughter of Emperor Daigo), was the consort of Emperor Ichijo.

平安中期の公卿。閑院太政大臣と称される。従一位(贈正一位)。右大臣師輔と醍醐天皇皇女康子内親王の子。幼くして両親を失い,30歳年上の姉で村上天皇中宮の安子のもと宮中で育ち,皇子と等しい扱いを受けた(『大鏡』)。おっとりと落ち着きはらった性格はこれによるか。25歳で従三位(非参議)となり,長徳3(997)年,失脚した藤原伊周に代わって内大臣となった。20年後右大臣を経て治安1(1021)年太政大臣に至り,死去するまでこの職を務めた。仁義公と諡され,閑院流の祖。娘の義子(醍醐天皇皇女有明内親王との子)は一条天皇の女御。
