Abnormal birth - Ijyoushuttannji

...There are many stories about children born in old folk tales, in which the children often take the form of snakes, frogs, snails, or other animals of worship. Even when they are born in human form, they often take the form of "small children" such as Issun-boshi and Gobunjiro, or "abnormally born children" born from the shin, thumb, or fruit such as Momotaro, Uri-kohime, and Thumb-Taro. Common forms in these old folk tales are, first, that a child is granted by active prayer, second, that the children have extraordinary abilities that ordinary people do not possess and accomplish great deeds, and third, that they marry happily and become the founders of noble families.

…昔話にも申し子譚が多くみられ，そこでは，申し子は多くの場合，ヘビ，カエル，タニシその他の信仰動物の形をとってあらわれる。また人の姿で生まれる場合でも，一寸法師，五分次郎などのような〈小さ子〉や，桃太郎，瓜子姫，親指太郎などのように脛，親指，果実などから生まれる〈異常出誕児〉の形をとってあらわれることが多い。これらの昔話に共通する形式としては，第1に，積極的に祈願することによって子どもが授けられることであり，第2は，申し子が普通の人のもちえないすぐれた能力を有し，大事業をなしとげるということ，第3は，幸福な結婚をして，すぐれた家の始祖となることである。…
