Painter of Flémalle - Maître de Flémalle (French)

Date of birth and death unknown. An unknown painter from the 15th century in the Netherlands. Along with Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden, he belongs to the first generation of Early Netherlandish painting. He is so named after three panels near Liège that are said to be the "Flemalle Abbey Altarpiece" (Städel Museum, Frankfurt), and a group of works, including the "Merode Altarpiece" and the "Nativity" in Dijon, are attributed to him. Due to the stylistic similarity to Weyden, the most popular theory in recent years is that he was Weyden's teacher, Robert Campin of Tournai. Like Jan, he was one of the earliest painters to master the technique of oil painting. He was more conscious of the plane of the painting than the space, and while he was able to depict subjects in minute detail with vivid colors, he also showed keen observation of nature in his handling of landscapes and light.

生没年不詳。15世紀ネーデルラントの逸名画家。ヤン・ファン・アイク、ロヒール・ファン・デル・ワイデンと並ぶ初期ネーデルラント絵画の第一世代に属する。リエージュ近郊の、いわゆる『フレマール修道院の祭壇画』と伝えられる3枚の板絵（フランクフルト、シュテーデル美術館）にちなんでこうよばれ、『メローデ祭壇画』やディジョンの『聖誕』を中心とする作品群が同画家に帰される。ワイデンとの様式的類似から、その師トゥールネーのロベルト・カンピンとする説が近年有力である。ヤンと同じくもっとも早く油彩画技法に習熟した画家。空間よりも画平面への意識が強く、鮮やかな色彩で対象の細密な描写を実現する一方で、風景や光の処理では鋭い自然観察を示している。
