An old town in the southern part of Amakusa Kamishima, Amakusa District, Kumamoto Prefecture. The main settlement of Tanasoko and the deep-sea fishing base of Miyata are located on the flat land along the bay coast. Rice is the main agricultural production area, and sea bream and shrimp farming is a major part of the fishing industry. Kuratake in the west is part of Unzen-Amakusa National Park. In March 2006, Amakusa merged with Hondo City, Ushibuka City, and the towns of Ariake, Goshoura, Sumimoto, Shinwa, Itsuwa, Amakusa, and Kawaura to become a city. 25.57 km2 . 3,878 people (2003). 熊本県天草郡,天草上島南部の旧町。湾岸の平地に主集落の棚底(たなそこ),遠洋漁業根拠地の宮田がある。米作を中心とした農業を営み,漁業では,タイ,エビなどの養殖が盛ん。西部にある倉岳は雲仙天草国立公園に属する。2006年3月,本渡市,牛深市,天草郡有明町,御所浦町,栖本町,新和町,五和町,天草町,河浦町と合併し市制,天草市となる。25.57km2。3878人(2003)。
