Italian painter. He did not have a strong influence on other painters in his time. He is known more as a theorist of perspective and other theories than as a painter. However, in modern times his art has been highly praised and he is considered one of the most innovative painters of 15th-century Italy. He was born in Borgo San Sepolcro near Arezzo in central Italy. His name first appears in records in 1439 as an assistant to Domenico Veneziano on the mural decoration of the Chapel of Sant'Egidio in the Hospital of Santa Maria Nuova in Florence.

イタリアの画家。彼の時代には他の画家たちに，それほど強い影響を及ぼすことはなかった。また彼は，絵画作品よりも遠近法などの理論家としてその名を知られていたが，近代になってその芸術が高く評価され，15世紀イタリアを代表する革新的な画家の一人に数えられるに至った。　イタリア中部のアレッツォに近いボルゴ･サン･セポルクロBorgo San Sepolcroに生まれる。1439年にフィレンツェのサンタ･マリア･ヌオーバ病院内のサンテジディオ礼拝堂壁画装飾の仕事で，ドメニコ･ベネツィアーノの助手として初めてその名が記録に現れる。
