Ishizuri - Ishizuri

Japanese:
Ishizuri - Ishizuri

The dyed cloth is stretched over a rough board and, while adding water, the surface is rubbed flat with a hard object, which rubs against the raised areas, releasing the dye and creating shading in the cloth. This method is used to transfer the pattern onto the fabric by placing a board with wood grain or an object engraved with a simple pattern underneath. It is even more effective if a pigment is used instead of a dye. From the Meiji to Taisho periods, cotton fabrics with wood grain patterns printed on them using this method were often used for women's raincoats. A hard piece of wood in the shape of a clapper is used to rub the fabric. This is called ishi-zuri because the finished product resembles takuhon (stone printing), a method of copying letters or patterns engraved on stone or metal onto paper, and does not mean that a stone is used for rubbing. When a piece of fabric with an uneven surface, such as wrinkled crepe or thick tsumugi, is laid on a flat board and rubbed with a stone, the raised areas of the fabric rub against each other, creating a tasteful and elegant effect. This is called atamazuri, which is different from regular stone rub.
