Siris - Siris

Japanese: シリス - しりす

A general term for annelids belonging to the family Syllidae of the class Polychaeta. 84 species are known in Japan. They are small among the polychaetes, and there are no particularly useful species, but a considerable number of them live in colonies of sessile organisms such as bryozoans, hydrozoans, and ascidians, and in the mud on the seabed, so they are thought to occupy an important position in the food chain in nature. Small species have a body length of 2 to 3 mm, while large species can reach 60 mm. Most of the body is cylindrical and slightly flattened dorsally and ventrally, but some are flattened like a plate.

多毛綱シリス科Syllidaeに属する環形動物の総称。日本では84種が知られている。多毛類の中でも小型で，とくに有用種は見当たらないが，付着生物のコケムシ，ハイドロゾア，ホヤなどの群落中や海底の泥中にかなりの個体数がすんでいるので，自然界では食物連鎖上，重要な位置を占めるものと考えられる。　体長は小型の種類では2～3mm，大型な種類で60mmになる。体は大部分が背腹にやや扁平な円筒状であるが，なかには板状に扁平なものもある。
