…Rituals are broadly divided into those for grains such as wheat, rice, foxtail millet, and corn, and those for taro, yams, and their variants, taro. Wheat-cropping rituals are widespread in the Old World, such as the Orient and Europe, while rice-cropping rituals are found in the mainland and islands of East Asia and Southeast Asia, including Japan, foxtail millet-cropping rituals in East Asia, South Asia, and Africa, and corn rituals in the New World, such as North America and Central and South America. Rituals for potatoes are also held among root-cropping farmers in Oceania, such as Micronesia, Polynesia, and Melanesia.
