1865‐1915 British geographer. Born in Galashiels, he graduated from Oxford University, then earned a degree at the University of Freiburg in Germany and studied in France. In 1891 he became an assistant to P. Geddes, and in 1899 he moved to Oxford University, where he succeeded H. J. Mackinder as professor in 1910. In his early years he produced many works on climatology and oceanography, his most famous work being The Distribution of Precipitation (1901).
