Andrew John Herbertson

British geographer. Born in Galashiels, he graduated from Oxford University, then earned a degree at the University of Freiburg in Germany and studied in France. In 1891 he became an assistant to P. Geddes, and in 1899 he moved to Oxford University, where he succeeded H. J. Mackinder as professor in 1910. In his early years he produced many works on climatology and oceanography, his most famous work being The Distribution of Precipitation (1901). In 1904 he gave a lecture on the division of the world's natural regions based on geological structure, topography, and climate.

イギリスの地理学者。ガラシールズに生まれ，オックスフォード大学を卒業後，ドイツのフライブルク大学で学位を得，フランスでも学んだ。1891年，P.ゲッデスの下で助手となり，99年にはオックスフォード大学に移り，1910年，H.J.マッキンダーの後を継いで教授となった。初期には気候学や海洋学に関する業績が多くあり，その代表作は《降水の分布》(1901)である。1904年には地質構造，地形，気候に基づく世界の自然地域区分について講演を行った。
