A city in southern Vietnam. Formerly known as Saigon. It was the capital of South Vietnam until 1975, but was renamed to its current name after unification with North Vietnam. With a population of 4.32 million (1993), it is the largest city in the country. It is located on the Saigon River delta, which continues north from the vast Mekong River delta, 97 km upstream from its mouth. It is 10 meters above sea level and has a river port. The Saigon River is 250-300 meters wide here, and is 10 meters deep, so ocean-going ships can easily navigate upstream. This region was originally a sphere of influence for Cambodia, where many Khmer people lived, and in the early modern period it was a regional commercial center.
