Angelica acutiloba (Sieb.et Zucc.) Kitagawa

Japanese: トウキ(当帰) - トウキ(英語表記)Angelica acutiloba (Sieb.et Zucc.) Kitagawa
Angelica acutiloba (Sieb.et Zucc.) Kitagawa
A perennial plant of the Apiaceae family that grows on rocky mountain areas and is cultivated as a medicinal plant (illustration). It contains essential oils and has a unique fragrance. The branched stems are 40-90 cm tall, hairless, and often purple-brown at the base. The leaves are 1-3 times tripinnate, compound, with long, lanceolate terminal pinnae that are sharply pointed and have a glossy surface. Cut stems and leaves give off a strong fragrance. In summer, compound umbels are produced at the ends of the branches, and many small, five-petaled white flowers bloom. The fruit is elliptical, divided into two broad-winged caryopsis. There are many variations, and those that grow wild in the mountains of central Honshu and north and Hokkaido are called Miyamatouki, or Iwatetouki.
