Emil Nolde

German painter. Born Emil Hansen in Norde, Schleswig-Holstein. After graduating from the sculpture school in Flensburg, he became a teacher at the School of Arts and Crafts in St. Gallen, Switzerland. After 1898, he studied painting in Munich, Paris, and Copenhagen, and became a painter. He started out with impressionism, but overcame it and established his own expressionist style. He lived in Dresden from 1905 to 1907, and was briefly a guest member of the expressionist group "Brücke (Bridge)", but they parted ways after a short time and he continued to explore solitude for the rest of his life. In 1914, he traveled to the Far East, Japan, and Southeast Asia via Siberia. After World War I, he produced works in Berlin and Seebühel, but the Nazis suppressed them as degenerate art. He was skilled in vivid colors and fantastical religious paintings, landscapes, and floral paintings. He also produced many watercolors and prints. He died in Seebühel. His residence is now the Norde Museum.

ドイツの画家。本名Emil Hansen。シュレスウィヒのノルデに生まれる。フレンスブルクの彫刻学校を卒業後、スイスのザンクト・ガレンで工芸学校の教師となる。1898年以後ミュンヘン、パリ、コペンハーゲンで絵画を学び画家に転じた。印象主義から出発してこれを乗り越え、表現主義的な独自の画風を樹立した。1905～07年ドレスデンに住み、一時表現主義のグループ「ブリュッケ（橋）」の客員となったが短期間で別れ、生涯孤独の探究を続けた。14年シベリア経由で極東、日本、東南アジアを旅行。第一次世界大戦後はベルリンとゼービュールで制作したが、ナチスにより退廃芸術として弾圧された。鮮烈な色彩と幻想味豊かな宗教画、風景画、花の絵を得意とする。水彩画および版画の作品も多い。ゼービュールで死去。住居はノルデ美術館となっている。
