A world-famous spa and health resort located at the confluence of the Tepla River and the Ohře River, a tributary of the Elbe River, in Western Bohemia in the western Czech Republic. German name: Karlsbad. Population: 56,000 (1991). Before World War II, it was a German town (53,300 Germans in 1939). The town's name comes from Emperor Charles IV (King of Bohemia, Charles I).
