Campos (English spelling)
A city in the northeast of Rio de Janeiro State, southeast of Brazil. The central settlement is located about 230 km northeast of the state capital Rio de Janeiro, on the south bank of the Paraíba do Sul River, about 50 km upstream from the mouth of the river. It is one of the most important commercial centers in the state, distributing sugar cane, cacao, coffee, cotton, fruit, and tobacco produced in the fertile agricultural areas around it. Industry is also developed, with factories for sugar refining, fruit canning, rum, textiles, leather products, tobacco, and coffee processing. Oil was discovered in the Campos Basin in 1980, and development is underway. A railway and a main road linking Rio and Vitoria pass through the city, and a railway branching off from here connects the city to cities in the Paraíba do Sul River valley. Population: 174,218 (estimated 1980).
