In the Meiji era, the government combined a military hospital (Tokyo Prefectural Hospital) with the Shogunate's medical institute to form a medical school and hospital (later renamed Daigaku Toko), which became the precursor to the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Tokyo. W. Willis, the director of the medical school and hospital, was British, but later (in June 1869, the second year of the Meiji era) the government decided to adopt German medicine, and Germans L. Müller, W. Schultze, and J.
