Gojo family

Japanese: 五条家 - ごじょうけ

There are two types of clans: Takatsuji Tamenaga's second son Takanaga from the mid-Kamakura period, and Kyushu's Yabe clan, descended from Kiyohara Yoshie's second son Yorimoto from the Nanboku-cho period, who planned to restore the Southern Court. The former clan has had successive generations of scholars of literature and university leaders, and in the Edo period also became the head of sumo wrestling, but gradually lost its influence as a head of the Yoshida clan. In the Meiji period, it was made a viscount. The latter later belonged to the Otomo, Kato, and then the Tachibana clans, and became a baron in the Meiji period.

鎌倉時代中期の高辻為長の次男高長の流れと，南北朝時代の清原良枝の次男頼元の流れをくむ南朝再興を策した九州矢部の小豪族とがある。前者は代々文章博士，大学頭となり，江戸時代には相撲の司家ともなったが，次第に吉田司家のために司家としては勢力が衰えた。明治にいたり子爵。後者はのち大友，加藤，次いで立花氏に属して，明治にいたり男爵。
