In buildings, this refers to flat plate-like components that divide the interior space completely independent of the structure and are designed to be very easy to move. In a broad sense, this includes Japanese architectural shoji and fusuma doors, as well as free-standing furniture, curtains, partitions, and folding screens used to separate the kitchen, dining room, and living room in a home. They are widely used in rental buildings and general offices because they allow the space to be freely changed according to the purpose of use. Prefabricated components are generally used, with fixed ends laid in advance and partitions fitted between them. They can be moved freely within the area where the fixed ends are laid.

建築物において，その構造体とはまったく独立して内部の空間を分割し，かつ移動がきわめて容易なようにつくられた平板状の部材をいう。広義には日本建築の障子や襖，また住宅の台所と食堂や居間を区切るための置き家具，カーテン類，ついたて，屏風なども含まれる。使用目的に従って空間を自由に変化させることができるため，貸ビルや一般のオフィスなどに広く用いられている。プレハブ部材が一般的で，事前に固定端を敷設しておき，その間に仕切板をはめこむ。固定端の敷設されている範囲内で自由に移動できる。
