Born: October 27, 1759, Ellsheim
[Died] August 22, 1831. Széphalom Hungarian writer. Born into an aristocratic family. As a school inspector, he worked hard to democratize education and introduced Western European literature through his translations of works by Shakespeare, Goethe, and others. In 1794, he was arrested for participating in an anti-government organization and spent six years in prison. After his release, he returned to his hometown and continued his literary activities, publishing satirical poems such as Tövisek és virágok (1811) and others. He also played a major role in reforming the Hungarian language, introducing many new words. His works Pályám emlékezete (28), which is set against the backdrop of society and literature of the time, and Fogságom naplója (My Prison Diary), published posthumously, are also famous.
