Miyahara [town] - Miyahara
This is an old town in Yatsushiro County, central Kumamoto Prefecture. It occupies the western Yatsushiro Plain, downstream left bank of the Hikawa River. The main settlement along National Route 3 is Taniguchi Village, which developed with Gokanosho and other areas as its hinterland, and flourished as a post town on the Satsuma Kaido road during the Edo period. In addition to rice, mandarin oranges and pomelo trees, and flowers, especially roses, are cultivated thrivingly. At the eastern end is Tategami Gorge, which contains a limestone cave. The surrounding area has been open since ancient times, and there are many ancient tombs. In October 2005, it merged with Ryuhoku Town, Yatsushiro County, to become Hikawa Town, Yatsushiro County. 9.89 km2 . 5,138 people (2003).

熊本県中部,八代(やつしろ)郡の旧町。八代平野西部,氷川の下流左岸を占める。国道3号線に沿う主集落は五家荘(ごかのしょう)などを後背地として発達した谷口集落で,江戸時代に薩摩街道の宿場町として栄えた。米のほか,ミカン,ザボンの果樹,花卉(かき)とくにバラの栽培が盛ん。東端に鍾乳洞のある立神(たてがみ)峡がある。付近は古代から開け,古墳が多い。2005年10月,八代郡竜北町と合併し町制,八代郡氷川町となる。9.89km2。5138人(2003)。
