〘noun〙① The master of the house. Ie-aruji (house master). ※Noin's Makura (end of the 10th century) 6: "Being the master of the house, he knew well and opened the door." ※Masukagami (around 1368-76) 9: "He dropped in at the mysterious lodging and asked the master about it." ② The mistress. A housewife. ※Sesui Sho (1628) 6: "You can now become the master of this house. " ③ The owner of a rental house. ※Hoshishinshu (around 1216) 3: "Now, renting someone's house <abbreviated> is a very easy thing to do, so he made arrangements to become the master." ④ In early modern times, a person who looks after and regulates rental houses on behalf of the landlord or the owner of the house. Yanushi (landlord) . Manager. ⇔ Tenant. ※Kabuki: Shitenno Kaede Edo Sho (1804) 2nd verse: “If the tenants make fun of the landlord, it will be a disgrace to the association.”

Iwaraji Iharaji [Landlord]

〘Noun〙 A housewife from a middle-class family. Later, it often referred to the housewife of a farmer. ※Haiku poem, Seisho Senku (1648), 3 "Pull it over and hold it in three places, The owner of this house (Iharaji) will be happy and pleased." [Additional notes] This is a variation of "Ihearu-ji (house owner)." There are also various theories, such as "Ihenushi (house owner)" changing to "Ihauji" or "Iharaji," or that "Iheto-ji (house owner)" was written as "Ka-do-ji" but was misread.

いわらじ いはらじ【家主】

〘名〙 中流家庭の主婦。後には、特に農家の主婦をさす場合が多い。※俳諧・正章千句(1648)三「引すゑて三の口をもすはるべし やすくよろこぶこれの家主(イハラジ)」[補注]「いへあるじ(家主)」が変化したもの。なお、「いへぬし(家主)」が「いはうじ」「いはらじ」と変化した、また、「いへとじ(家刀自)」を「家童子」と表記したものの誤読による、などの諸説がある。

〘名〙 家の主人。一家の長。※本朝麗藻(1010か)下・夏日陪於員外端尹文亭同賦泉伝万歳声詩一首〈藤原為時〉「漢主若知家主意、山声定愧水声遙」※評判記・色道大鏡(1678)一二「家主(カシュ)に此女を乞請」 〔墨子‐兼愛・中〕
