〘noun〙① The master of the house. Ie-aruji (house master). ※Noin's Makura (end of the 10th century) 6: "Being the master of the house, he knew well and opened the door." ※Masukagami (around 1368-76) 9: "He dropped in at the mysterious lodging and asked the master about it." ② The mistress. A housewife. ※Sesui Sho (1628) 6: "You can now become the master of this house. " ③ The owner of a rental house. ※Hoshishinshu (around 1216) 3: "Now, renting someone's house <abbreviated> is a very easy thing to do, so he made arrangements to become the master." ④ In early modern times, a person who looks after and regulates rental houses on behalf of the landlord or the owner of the house. Iwaraji Iharaji [Landlord]

〘Noun〙 A housewife from a middle-class family. Later, it often referred to the housewife of a farmer. ※Haiku poem, Seisho Senku (1648), 3 "Pull it over and hold it in three places, The owner of this house (Iharaji) will be happy and pleased." [Additional notes] This is a variation of "Ihearu-ji (house owner)." There are also various theories, such as "Ihenushi (house owner)" changing to "Ihauji" or "Iharaji," or that "Iheto-ji (house owner)" was written as "Ka-do-ji" but was misread.

いわらじいはらじ【家主】

〘名〙中流家庭の主婦。後には、特に農家の主婦をさす場合が多い。※俳諧・正章千句（1648）三「引すゑて三の口をもすはるべしやすくよろこぶこれの家主(イハラジ)」[補注]「いへあるじ（家主）」が変化したもの。なお、「いへぬし（家主）」が「いはうじ」「いはらじ」と変化した、また、「いへとじ（家刀自）」を「家童子」と表記したものの誤読による、などの諸説がある。
