Dream Age - Yumenoshiro

Japanese:
Dream Age - Yumenoshiro

This work was written by Yamagata Banto, a townsman and scholar of Osaka in the late Edo period. It consists of 12 volumes and 12 books. It is a representative book of practical learning and enlightenment in the late Edo period. It was originally titled "Atonement for Myself," but was changed to "The Age of Dreams" at the instruction of Nakai Riken, his teacher at Kaitokudo. The initial draft, 6 volumes and 3 books, was published in 1802 (Kyowa 2), and the following year it was revised to 7 volumes and 7 books. With reference to notes by Nakai Chikuzan and Riken, he added drafts and overwritings from before, and in 1820 (Bunsei 3), despite his blindness, he completed the work in 12 volumes. It is divided into sections on astronomy, geography, the Age of the Gods, historical periods, systems, economics, treatises, miscellaneous writings, heresy, no ghosts (volumes 1 and 2), and miscellaneous essays. Heavily influenced by the Kaitokudo school of thought including Goi Ranshu, Nakai Chikuzan and Riken, he distinguished between natural and human phenomena with a thorough rationalism. He also had a deep knowledge of Dutch studies and trusted Western science, supported the heliocentric theory and presented a theory of the light-dark world cosmology, introduced the results of modern medicine, did not believe in the descriptions in the Nihon Shoki before the Ojin period, denied all popular beliefs, and developed the greatest atheism of the Edo period. His arguments are internationally acclaimed today. As he became blind in his later years, there are no handwritten copies, but there are over 50 copies.
