...Laughter in Japanese has various nuances, and the differences are expressed by adding adjectives to the beginning, such as a smile, a bitter smile, a cold sneer, a big laugh, a cheerful laugh, and a loud laugh. In contrast, in English, the distinction between laugh and smile is roughly based on whether or not the laugh is made out loud. In the above examples, the first three fall into the category of smile, and the last three into the category of laugh.
