A deciduous shrub or small tree of the Anacardiaceae family cultivated for ornamental purposes, it can reach a height of 8 m. The leaves are alternate, ovate or obovate, and simple, 3-8 cm long. In June and July, panicles 15-20 cm long appear at the ends of the twigs, and many small purplish flowers appear. The flowers are polymorphic, 3 mm in diameter, and most are sterile. After falling off, the pedicels are covered with long, purplish or greenish hairs, giving the whole inflorescence a smoke-like appearance, hence the English name "smoke tree." There are five sepals, five petals, and five stamens, and the ovary is one-lobed. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
