Smoke tree

Japanese: ハグマノキ（英語表記）smoke tree

A deciduous shrub or small tree of the Anacardiaceae family cultivated for ornamental purposes, it can reach a height of 8 m. The leaves are alternate, ovate or obovate, and simple, 3-8 cm long. In June and July, panicles 15-20 cm long appear at the ends of the twigs, and many small purplish flowers appear. The flowers are polymorphic, 3 mm in diameter, and most are sterile. After falling off, the pedicels are covered with long, purplish or greenish hairs, giving the whole inflorescence a smoke-like appearance, hence the English name "smoke tree." There are five sepals, five petals, and five stamens, and the ovary is one-lobed.

観賞用に栽培されるウルシ科の落葉低木または小高木で，高さ8mに達する。葉は互生し，卵形または倒卵形の単葉で，長さ3～8cm。6～7月ごろ，小枝の先端に長さ15～20cmの円錐花序を出し，多数の帯紫色の小さい花をつける。花は雑性で径3mm，大部分は不稔性で落花後，花梗に長い開出した帯紫色または帯緑色の長毛をつけて，花序全体が煙のように見えるので，smoke treeの英名がついた。萼片，花弁，おしべはそれぞれ5個，子房は1室。
