[Born] 1853
[Died] 1927. A German educator from London, who contributed to the introduction of Herbartian pedagogy to Japan. He studied languages ​​and history at the University of Berlin, graduating in 1879. While working as a teacher at a gymnasium, he also traveled to England and France to study, and was involved in researching the education system. In 1887, he came to Japan on the recommendation of von Goslar, the Prussian Minister of Education, and taught German and pedagogy at the Imperial University of Tokyo. During that time, he proposed the establishment of a secondary teacher training course inspired by the German Hohe-Lehrer seminar system. In 1999, this was enacted, and the Department of Education for Special Students was established at the Faculty of Letters of the Imperial University, where he lectured on pedagogy. He mainly lectured on the educational theories of the Herbartian school, such as W. Rein, Kern, and GA Lintner, and nurtured such educational scholars as Tomi Tanimoto, Genichi Yuhara, and Suematsu Inagaki. He left Japan in 1900 when his term of office expired. After returning to Germany, he served as principal of the Ober-Realschule in Kiel and as a teacher of English language and literature at the University of Lausanne.

ドイツ人の教育家,日本にヘルバルト派教育学を導入した功績者。ベルリン大学で語学,歴史学を学び,1879年卒業。ギムナジウムの教師をつとめるかたわらイギリス,フランスに遊学,また教育制度の調査にも従事した。 87年プロシアの文部大臣フォン・ゴスラーの推挙を得て来日し,東京帝国大学でドイツ語と教育学を教えた。その間ドイツのホーヘ・レーレルゼミナールの制度にヒントを得た中等教員養成課程の設置を建言。 99年これがいれられて帝国大学文科大学に特約生教育学科が設けられ,その教育学の講義を担当した。おもに W.ライン,ケルン,G.A.リントナーなどヘルバルト学派の教育説を講じ,谷本富,湯原元一,稲垣末松らの教育学者を育てた。 1900年任期満了して離日。帰国後はキールのオーベル・レアルシューレの校長,ローザンヌ大学の英語・英文学の教師などをつとめた。
