Since the 18th century, Chinese kingdoms such as Ha Tien were subjugated by the Quang Nam Dynasty's Nam Tien (Southward Advance) policy, and the Mekong Delta became Vietnamese territory. From 1787, the Quang Nam Dynasty's prince, Nguyen Phuoc Anh (later Emperor Gia Long), based himself in this area with the help of French volunteers such as Bene and Thai troops, and after the death of Nguyen Van Hue, he rapidly advanced north and pacified the entire country in 1802.
