A bird of the family Buntingidae in the order Passeriformes. It is the size of a sparrow, with a total length of about 15 cm. Its body shape and color are similar to that of a bunting, but it is more reddish brown overall and has a crest. When excited, it ruffles these crest feathers. The sexes are different, with males' summer plumage having black crowns and cheeks, and white brows and throat. It has a reddish brown band on its chest. Females are lighter in color than the males, with brown upper heads and cheeks and pale yellow brows. It breeds in coniferous forests in the high latitudes of Eurasia. It migrates to Japan as a winter bird, and is often found in lowlands with little snow. It seeks food in pine forests and secondary forests at the foot of mountains, farmland, waterside areas, lowland rice fields, and wetlands.
