It is located where the Jesuit mission Itapua was established in the mid-17th century, but it was left abandoned for about 200 years after the mission moved to Encarnación, Paraguay. Construction of the city finally began in the mid-19th century, and in 1870 the Corrientes provincial government decided to build it.
