Asiatic black bear (Tsukinowaguma) - Selenartos thibetanus
A mammal of the Ursidae family in the carnivora order. It is a medium-sized bear with a black body and a crescent-shaped white spot on its chest. It is found in areas from northern Iran through the Himalayas, south to northern Vietnam and north to the Amur region. The Japanese subspecies, the Japanese black bear S. t . japonicus (illustration), is common in Honshu but rare in Shikoku and especially Kyushu. It has relatively well-developed forelimbs, giving it excellent tree-climbing abilities, and it eats large amounts of acorns and other nuts from trees. It is much smaller than the brown bear, with a body length of 130-160 cm, a tail length of about 8 cm, and a weight of about 120 kg.
