Song

...a literary term that describes a style of storytelling in the mid-Heian period. It has two meanings. One appears early in Eiga Monogatari (Asaryoku) and means a short story related to a song, and is thought to be almost the same content as the oral tales called utagatari at the time. The second is a new usage in modern times. While the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter and the Tale of Utsubo have long been called tsukushimonogatari (fictional stories), the new term is used to distinguish between the three works The Tale of Ise, The Tale of Yamato, and The Tale of Heichu. This term was created for the convenience of writing literary history.
