In marine biology, the deep sea refers to a depth of 200m or more, with the bathyal zone (or archibenthal zone) at 200-3000m, the abyssal zone at 3000m to the ocean floor (less than about 6000m), and the hadal zone (or ultra-abyssal zone) at any depth beyond that. From the viewpoint of ocean structure, the surface layer (also called the surface mixed layer) is subject to seasonal changes from the ocean surface to a depth of 200m, and the main ocean layer, where the temperature drops rapidly, is located at a depth of 200-1000m, and then gradually drops from 1000-3000m, and remains almost constant below 3000m. *Some of the terminology that refers to "hadal zone" is listed below.
