Ambabayashi

Japanese: あんばばやし
Ambabayashi

...As a god of protection against smallpox, he has spread throughout the Kanto region and is worshipped as a shrine within the precincts or as a small shrine. In Inba and Katori counties in Chiba Prefecture, the Anba Bayashi, which goes "Anba Osugi Daimyojin, drive away the devil, Yoiyasa," is passed down, and the Anba dance is performed on the festival day of the smallpox god in March. In some areas, events are passed down in which a Tengu mask borrowed from the shrine and a portable shrine are carried around the village to drive away evil plagues.

From Sakuragawa Village

...A village in Inashiki County, southern Ibaraki Prefecture. Population 7,871 (1995). Located on the south shore of Lake Kasumigaura, the village area extends from the lowlands along the lake to the eastern end of the Tsukuba Inashiki Plateau. Ukishima in the east was an island floating in Lake Kasumigaura until the Meiji period, and was even mentioned in a poem by Ki no Tsurayuki in ancient times, but it became part of the lake due to land reclamation after the Taisho period. In the past, it was an early-season rice region and rice cultivation was the main industry, but in recent years vegetable production has increased. Lotus root is also produced in large quantities, and the area is known as a specialty product. The lake shore is included in Suigo Tsukuba Quasi-National Park, and there are many historical sites and scenic spots, such as Ukishima, the ruins of Jinguji Castle, where Kitabatake Chikafusa was based during the Nanboku-cho period, and Jinguji, a famous Tendai sect temple.
