The Six Chronicles of Life

A literary novel from the Qing Dynasty in China. An autobiography by Shen Fu (1763-?). Published in 1877. Six volumes. It is made up of six stories: Records of the Pleasures of the Bedroom, Records of Leisure, Records of the Sadness of Kanbin, Records of the Joys of a Trip to the Waves, Records of the Chung Shan Mountains, and Records of the Way to Health, but only the first four volumes remain. This novel is rare in China for being an autobiography and for its heart-wrenching longing for the author's late wife. It is a gem of a short work that vividly depicts the life of a lower-class literate man who lived only for love, with a warm eye on his wife, who was in a difficult financial and emotional position due to her marriage life, family troubles, and her wandering life as a guest of the shogunate.

中国、清(しん)代の文語小説。沈復(しんふく)（1763―？）の自伝。1877年刊。六巻。「閨房記楽(けいぼうきらく)」「閑情記趣(かんじょうきしゅ)」「坎坷記愁(かんかきしゅう)」「浪游記快(ろうゆうきかい)」「中山記歴(ちゅうざんきれき)」「養生記道(ようじょうきどう)」の六記であるが、前四巻だけ現存する。この小説は自伝であること、亡き妻を思う情の切なることで中国では珍しい作品である。妻との結婚生活、家族間のトラブル、幕客としての放浪生活など経済的にも感情的にもつらい立場にある妻への温かい目、夫のためにふさわしい妾(めかけ)を得ようと努力する妻、愛のみに生きた下層読書人の生活を如実に描いた珠玉の小品である。
