A canal that uses the Main River from Mainz in western Germany, passing through Bamberg and Nuremberg, before reaching the Danube at Kelheim in Bavaria. Construction plans began in 1922, with the canal completed as far as Nuremberg in 1972 and fully operational in 1992. The canal now links 13 countries in Central and Southeast Europe over a distance of 3,500 km from the North Sea to the Black Sea. There are also many hydroelectric power plants on the canal.
