Androgen - androgen (English spelling)

Androgen - androgen (English spelling)

A general term for male hormones and substances that have the same physiological effects. They have effects such as sexual differentiation during the fetal period, maintaining the function of reproductive organs, the expression of secondary male sexual characteristics, and promoting protein anabolism. Chemically, they are all steroid derivatives. They are secreted from the Leydig interstitial cells of the testes. The main naturally occurring hormones include testosterone, which has the strongest physiological activity, as well as androsterone, dehydroepiandrosterone, and androstenedione. Adrenosterone, which is detected in the adrenal cortex, is also an androgen.

Pharmaceutical products include testosterone acetate and propionate, and methyltestosterone, which is testosterone with a methyl group at the 17th position.

The use of artificially synthesized anabolic steroids such as stanozol (doping) for the purpose of increasing muscle strength through the protein anabolic effects of male hormones has become a problem in modern sports, and tests for these steroids (doping tests) are being carried out.
