The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta (Assumption of the Virgin Mary) is made of faded pink brick and features two lion statues on the pillars on either side of the entrance, and a three-tiered arcade decorating the façade in the Lombard-Romanesque style. The relief of Christ's Descent from the Cross (1178) in the south transept is a masterpiece by local sculptor Benedetto Antelami (c. 1150-c. 1230), who also designed the adjoining baptistery. …
