The capital of Numidia in ancient North Africa. Today, Constantine is in Algeria. In the 3rd century BC, it became a base for Italian merchants. In the 2nd and 3rd centuries, it became a Roman territory and prospered as an export port for grain and ore. It fell into ruin for a time, but was rebuilt and given its name by Constantine I (the Great).
