The capital of Maysan Governorate in southeastern Iraq. It faces the Tigris River, about 300 km southeast of Baghdad. It is located on a low-lying alluvial plain, but has a hot, dry climate. Since the mid-19th century, it has developed as a river port for Tigris River shipping linking Baghdad and Basra. Agricultural development has progressed in the surrounding area, along with the construction of a large irrigation canal, and it is a center for the distribution of agricultural products, livestock, wool, and leather. It is famous for its silverwork, and also produces a lot of carpets. It is also connected to Baghdad and Basra by rail. Population: 131,758 (1985 estimate). イラクの南東部,マイサーン県の県都。バグダードの南東約 300km,チグリス川に面する。低平な沖積平野にあるが,気候は高温乾燥性である。 19世紀中頃以降,バグダードとバスラを結ぶチグリス川水運の河港として発展。周辺は大灌漑用水路とともに農業開発が進み,農産物と家畜,羊毛,皮革を集散する。銀細工の名産地であり,絨毯の生産も多い。バグダード,バスラとは鉄道でも結ばれている。人口 13万 1758 (1985推計) 。
