Al-`Amārah

Al-`Amārah
The capital of Maysan Governorate in southeastern Iraq. It faces the Tigris River, about 300 km southeast of Baghdad. It is located on a low-lying alluvial plain, but has a hot, dry climate. Since the mid-19th century, it has developed as a river port for Tigris River shipping linking Baghdad and Basra. Agricultural development has progressed in the surrounding area, along with the construction of a large irrigation canal, and it is a center for the distribution of agricultural products, livestock, wool, and leather. It is famous for its silverwork, and also produces a lot of carpets. It is also connected to Baghdad and Basra by rail. Population: 131,758 (1985 estimate).
