This refers to the parts of the inner wall surfaces of various animal organs that are kept moist by mucus. Mucous membranes consist of mucosal epithelium followed by submucosal connective tissue. Mucus is secreted from goblet cells between epithelial cells and from multicellular mucus glands. Its components vary depending on the organism, but the main ones are glycoproteins, sugars, and inorganic salts. Mucous membranes are found in the digestive, respiratory, reproductive, and excretory organs, and not only do they prevent and protect the inner wall surfaces from drying out, but some also have an absorbing or secreting function. Generally, mucous membranes do not become keratinized like the epidermis of the skin. [Sumio Takahashi] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
