[Birth] 1st January (1335) [Died] Yongle 16 (1418) Chinese politician and monk in the early Ming Dynasty. Born in Changzhou (Wu County, Jiangsu Province). His pen name was Shidao. His monk name was Daoyan. His posthumous name was Gongjing. When Empress Gao of Emperor Hongwu died in 1382, he was assigned to the King of Yan (→Emperor Yongle) to hold a memorial service for her. Later, in 99, he encouraged King to initiate the Jingnan Rebellion, which made King emperor. He was given the title of Prince's Junior Tutor for this achievement, and returned to secular life. He participated in the compilation of the "Annals of the Emperor Taizu" and the "Yongle Encyclopedia." He was also famous as a monk, and wrote works such as "Daoyu Lu" and "Essential Records of Pure Land Writings."
