Naypaul

A writer from the former British colony of Trinidad. A third generation Indian immigrant. Also known as Naipaul. He attended college in his native Trinidad and Tobago, graduated from Oxford University, and has since lived in the UK. In The Mystic Masseuse (1957) and The House of Mr Biswas (1961), he portrayed the poverty and suffocation of the Indian community in Trinidad and Tobago. His other works include novels such as Mr Stone and His Knights (1973), In the Free State (1971), and The Dark River (1979), as well as collections of short stories such as Miguel Street (1959). His critical works include The Middle Passage (1962) and India: A Wounded Civilisation (1977). He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2001.

旧英国領トリニダード島出身の作家。インド系移民の三世。ナイポールとも。生地トリニダード・トバゴのカレッジを出て，オックスフォード大学を卒業し，以後英国に居住。《神秘なマッサージ師》（1957年），《ビスワス氏の家》（1961年）ではトリニダード・トバゴのインド人社会の貧困と閉塞感を描いた。ほかに《ストーン氏とナイト爵仲間》（1973年），《自由国家で》（1971年），《暗い河》（1979年）などの長編や，《ミゲール・ストリート》（1959年）などの短編集がある。評論に《中間航路》（1962年），《インド――傷ついた文明》（1977年）ほか。2001年ノーベル文学賞。
