Japanese: トレンティノ・アルト・アディジェ[州](英語表記)Trentino‐Alto Adige
Trentino-Alto Adige (province)
A region in northeastern Italy. It has an area of 13,613 km2 and a population of 900,000 (1994). It is made up of two provinces, Trento and Bolzano-Bosen, and its capital is Trento. It is surrounded by Switzerland and Lombardy to the west, Austria to the north, and Veneto to the east and south. The state border in the northwest and the international border almost coincide with the watershed of the Alps, and the eastern border with Veneto is a series of mountains of the Dolomiti Alps, which have a unique mountain shape of 3,000 meters. The entire region is mountainous, with only a few flat areas along the valleys created by the Adige River, which flows south to Veneto, and its tributary, the Isarco River. Several major cities, such as Trento (German name Trient), Bolzano (Bosen), Bressanone (Brixen), and Melano (Melan), are scattered throughout the region.
