Dates of birth and death unknown. He is believed to be the author of the collection of fables known as Aesop's Fables. "Aesop" is the English pronunciation of Aesop's name. Although the exact details of his life are unknown, according to legend he was active in Greece in the first half of the 6th century BC. He is said to have been from Samos or to have been a Phrygian. According to Herodotus, he was a slave of the Samian Eadmon. He is famous for being framed for a crime he did not commit and executed by the people of Delphi. In quotations of Aesop's stories from the 5th century BC, the stories are told in connection with the deeds of Aesop himself. From this, it seems likely that a biography detailing his life's deeds was published early in the creation of Aesop's Fables (around the end of the 6th century BC), and Aesop appeared as the narrator of the fables included in it.
