A school of swordsmiths who made swords in the Awataguchi area of Kyoto during the early to mid-Kamakura period. According to the genealogy, Kuniyori and Kuni were the first and second generations, but the works of Kunitomo, Hisakuni, and Kunitsuna are the only ones that still bear signatures. In addition, the fourth generation Nokuni, the fifth generation Kunimitsu, and the sixth generation Yoshimitsu (→ Awataguchi Yoshimitsu) were also famous swordsmiths. Beautiful jigane (gane) with fine jinie (ground boiling) is said to be a characteristic of this school.
