Bando Shuka - Bando Shuka

Japanese: 坂東しうか - ばんどうしゅうか

Kabuki actor. There were four generations, but the first was the most famous. (1) First (1813-55, Bunka 10-Ansei 2) Stage name Yamatoya. Third son of the accountant of the Ichimura Theater. Formerly named Bando Tamanosuke, first Bando Tamasaburo. He changed his name to Shiuka in 1839 (Tenpo 10) after the haiku name of his foster father, Bando Mitsugoro III. In 1842, he was ranked as Kamijokichi, and competed for popularity with Ichikawa Danjuro VIII from the Houka to Ansei periods (1844-60). He was a female actor with a flamboyant style and excellent appearance. He excelled in evil woman roles, and his hit roles include Urasato in Akegarasu, Onna Seigen in Sumida-gawa, Okaru in Chushingura, Oni-gami no Omatsu, and Onna Narukami.

歌舞伎俳優。4世まであるが，初世が最も有名。(1)初世(1813‐55∥文化10‐安政2)　屋号大和屋。市村座の帳元の三男。前名坂東玉之助，初世坂東玉三郎。養父3世坂東三津五郎の俳名にちなみ，1839年(天保10)しうかと改名，42年上上吉に位付けされ，弘化～安政(1844‐60)にかけて8世市川団十郎と人気を競った。芸風がはなやかで風姿にすぐれた女方。悪婆（あくば）役を得意とし，当り役に《明烏》の浦里，《隅田川》の女清玄，《忠臣蔵》のお軽，鬼神のお松，女鳴神などがある。
