Japanese: 選手制度 - せんしゅせいど

A social system that selects participants from a particular group or society to participate in a competition or contest. Because competition and contests are based on the desire to demonstrate superiority in a particular ability, a competition system is needed to objectively select and socially recognize the best. In this case, a system is developed in which the best are selected from within a certain social range, such as a group, region, or country, and are recognized as representatives, and the best are selected through competition among these athletes. The athlete system is particularly evident and well developed in competitive sports.

競争や競技に参加するものを特定の集団や社会から選び出す社会的なしくみをいう。競争や競技は特定の能力における優越性を示そうとする願望にもとづくものであるから，すぐれているものを客観的に選び出し，社会的に承認する競技会制度を必要とする。この場合，集団や地域，国など一定の社会的範囲のなかから優れたものを選んで代表資格を持つことを認め，これらの選手の競争によって最も優れたものを選び出す制度を発達させる。選手制度は競技スポーツにおいてとくに顕著にみられ，発達している。
