The ancient Egyptian name for the area around present-day Somalia on the Indian Ocean coast of East Africa. Ancient Egyptian kings often sent expeditionary forces to Africa. In return, they imported goods not available in Egypt, such as ivory, gold, ebony, sandalwood, and myrrh, from the interior of Africa. The first records are from the 5th Dynasty (c. 2494-c. 2345 BC), but the most detailed are from Queen Hatshepsut of the 18th Dynasty (1567-1320 BC). In her mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahari, there are painted reliefs depicting large ships from the Punt expedition, unusual customs in the Punt region, and fish in the Red Sea.
